This all-star group, led by the award-winning pianist John Turville, explores a wide-ranging set of new music composed by John as well as material from Julian and new arrangements of choice repertoire from Tonino Horta, Michael Petrucciani and John Coltrane.
Taking inspiration from British jazz legends John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler, the Argentine composer and tango pianist Diego Schissi, and imbued with a deep love of the jazz and classical tradition, John’s writing is refined and wide-ranging, from lyrical ballads and spiky rhythmic compositions to reflective classical vignettes.
The JazzMann on John’s debut quintet CD release Head First: “His sound world is informed by the likes of Fred Hersch (the album title a playful though gracious twist on his name) and Bill Evans, yet is frequently imbued with the harmonic colouring of classical composers such as John Ireland, Federico Mompou and the French Romantics.”
The London Jazz News said, “The music is varied, reflecting Turville's eclectic influences. The eleven tracks comprise three latin numbers, some meditative piano and some energetic ensemble playing, all infused with Turville's sensitive piano playing.”
