National Jazz Archive – Great Welcome to JazzSteps Reps on ‘Recce’ Visit

JazzSteps committee members Chris & Carl recently enjoyed a fascinating and friendly visit to the National Jazz Archive (NJA).  It’s located on the first floor of Loughton Library.  Loughton is just off the M25, north of London, so about 2½ hours by car.  You need to check on its website for opening times – we chose Wednesday and made special arrangements with David Nathan, Jazz Research Archivist, who kindly put himself at our disposal.  His welcome and hospitality was exceptional, as was that of Project Manager Angela Davies and volunteers we met.

The photo shows David thumbing through a magazine, locating an item to illustrate his discussions with Chris.  Himself a lifelong jazz listener and reader of books and magazines with a decent collection to his name, Chris found he was in excellent company with David, a terrific jazz enthusiast and evangelist.  He’s been in post for over 20 years and displays an enviable encyclopedic recall; and is a great raconteur to boot!

We’ll produce a fuller article about what we learned in due course.  In the meantime, we recommend going to their website for a browse and signing up for their email newsletter
