Get Your Copy of Our Book: The Jazz Steps Story

Our book ‘The Jazz Steps Story’ is now available – priced £15 - at our gigs or via postal service (with Postage and Packing extra - see below).

With 150 pages and almost 200 illustrations, it covers how Jazzhouse has evolved over 22 years and its wide-reaching contributions to promoting jazz locally.  It also recognises the vibrant Nottingham jazz scene that predated Jazz Steps - and appreciates the wealth of jazz currently on offer.

Stan Tracy graces the front cover in recognition that he and his septet gave the first gig at the Bonington in 1997.  And Camilla George features to signal that her quartet appeared over two decades afterwards – a reminder of the continuing rich diversity of music and the wealth of emerging new talent that we have been delighted to host.

With a foreword (and poem) by local hero John Harvey, the chapters cover: 1 Beginnings, 2 Recollections, 3 Jazz Steps to Bonington, 4 The bigger picture, 5 Putting on a show, 6 Live at the Libraries, 7 Jazz education and awareness 8 Searching and researching.  The latter includes a full listing of the 859 gigs Jazz Steps has promoted between 1997 and 2019, with 638 gigs at the Bonington Theatre and a further 221 gigs in our Live at The Libraries tours, jointly promoted with Inspire.  Beyond that there are numerous educational workshops and projects that we have facilitated and supported.

Producing this book has been a significant collaborative effort, masterminded in the editing and design by Frank Knowles. Contributors include: Carl Billson, Tim Bullock, Katie Butcher, Tim Evans, Mike Gowland, Dave Groom, John Harvey, Trevor Kirby, Frank Knowles, Bob Meyrick, Chris Moore, Bernard Ory, Brian Pearce, Ian Perry, Esperanza Rodriguez and Dave Shepherd.  Print preparation was expertly handled by Andrew Rigby and our cover is by our ‘regular designer’ Tom Partridge.
