Simon Roth is a London-based drummer, composer and creative producer specialising in Contemporary, Jazz and World Music. He has toured the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada and Asia and played in prestigious venues and festivals across Europe, with highlights including Cheltenham Festival, Burghausen Jazz Festival, 12 Points!, Songlines Encounters Festival and the BBC Proms. Simon runs his own band Stories, and has recorded and performed extensively with the Elliot Galvin Trio, West African Dagaare group Vula Viel, Lauren Kinsella’s Thought-Fox, electroacoustic chamber ensemble Sefiroth, the Phil Meadows Group, and balkan band Paprika. The Elliot Galvin Trio won the Young European Jazz Artist of the Year 2014, and opened Burghausen Jazz Festival alongside Jamie Cullum. In Summer 2014, they embarked on Dreamland, a multimedia installation as part of Turner Contemporary’s Summer of Colour, through the Help Musicians UK Development Award. They also supported Jools Holland at Greenwich Music Time. The Phil Meadows Group were recently awarded the Peter Whittingham Award to establish a new chamber ensemble Engines Orchestra, and recorded their soon-to-be-released debut album ‘Lifecycles’, produced by Tim Garland. Thought-Fox were the recipients of the Music Network Young Musicwide Award from 2010 – 2013, which saw the band record, tour and run workshops around Ireland. Simon’s music has been performed at the BBC Proms and broadcast widely on national radio, including the BBC’s Late Junction, Jazz on 3, Jazz House and on Jazz FM. He produced Laura Jurd’s critically acclaimed debut album Landing Ground [Chaos Collective] and her soon-to-be-released album Human Spirit. Simon is also the founder / director of Pop-Up Circus: A Platform for Contemporary Activity – a roving platform for the contemporary arts, staging exhibitions and live events throughout London, from living rooms to steel workshops to galleries and arts centres. Pop-Up Circus exists to promote exceptional work, forging new working relationships between artists across disciplines, and has curated a steady stream of events since 2011 that showcase visual art, music, dance, theatre, film, food, literature and performance.
