Wendy Kirkland, piano and voice, with her trio celebrates the music of Piano Divas which has had significant radio airplay.
Wendy was awarded a Derbyshire music bursary at age 11 to fund tuition and subsequently achieved 8 ABRSM grades between ages of 11 and 16. Following a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sheffield, she achieved a successful transition from a career in professional engineering to full-time music, receiving piano tuition from Kate Williams, Naadia and Jamil Sherrif, Nicki Iles and Steve Melling. Her album, Piano Divas, was released in 2017, receiving airplay from Clare Teal on BBC R2 and Helen Mayhew on JazzFM, Andrea Vicari and Chris Hodgkins on JazzLondon Radio as well as numerous regional BBC and independent stations. The album has received enthusiastic reviews from Dave Gelly, the Observer (4 stars), Jazz Views and The Jazz Mann, Jazz Rag, Jazzwise, Bebop Spoken Here. Two months after release, it achieved a worldwide distribution deal from Discovery Records and GATS Japan. Wendy has worked with: Jim Mullen, Phil Robson, Alan Barnes, Karen Sharp, Sue McCreeth, Alex Garnett, Tommaso Starace, Adrian Ingram, Tony Kofi and has been interviewed by London Jazz News, The Jazz Podcast, The JazzUK Radio, Black Country Radio, High Peak Radio and 3 Towns Radio. In May 2012, Wendy and husband Pat Sprakes set up Chesterfield Jazz Club which continues to run monthly.
