This ‘After Hours’ concert at the Royal Concert Hall offers the rare chance to hear virtuoso classical clarinettist Julian Bliss play jazz, as he performs the music of Benny Goodman with his stellar septet. Growing up listening to performances of Benny Goodman from the age of seven, in 2010 Julian decided to form a group to perform his music. The album A Tribute to Benny Goodman was released in June 2012 to critical acclaim. On their recent sell-out US tour, Jazz Times said that “Bliss is capable of swinging mightily and adapting his formidable technique to the task at handâ€. He leads his band through some of the great tunes of the swing era, staying true to the authentic feel but with a modern twist. This concert follows a Hallé Orchestra concert the same evening (in which Julian plays Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 2) and will start 20 minutes after the main performance, around 9.45pm. The performance lasts 40 minutes and tickets are just £4, unless you’re also attending the Hallé concert, in which case they’re free. An eye-popping bargain either way!
