Due to other commitments, saxophonist Iain Dixon is unable to perform. We will now be entertaining a quintet adding Stan Sulzmann (ts,ss) and Dick Pearce
trumpet and Flugelhorn to the original players Nikki, duncan Hopkins and Stephen Keogh.
Featuring: Nikki Iles (piano) Duncan Hopkins (bass) Stephen Keogh (drums) Plus tba
Much of Nikki Iles's music, in particular her output for the Creative Jazz Orchestra in the early 90s, was written for the distinctive sound of Iain Dixon's tenor and clarinet Although she and Iain have come together sporadically on various projects over the last decade, this is the first chance that Nikki has had to play with Iain again in her own group.
She met Stephen in the north of England 10 years ago whilst playing with Pete King and has been first choice drummer on many of her numerous projects as he is for many other musicians
People who came to Nikki's concert at the Lakeside will have remembered the excellent bass player from Canada who accompanied her, for his wonderful phrasing and timing throughout the set
Iles is one of the most refreshing and promising figures to have emerged in the UK in recent times, with a liquid sound and supple, obliquely resolved phrasing as an improviser...... (The Guardian)
