'He is one of European jazz's most celebrated musicians...His music is precise, lucid and original, and at times breathtakingly lyrical ' - Visions of Britain
A recent edition of the Penguin Dictionary of Jazz described Jonathan as ' a national treasure' so how does one get such plaudits normally reserved for minor royalty. It just might have something to do with his extraordinary skills at the keyboard and the emotional range of his playing.
In the last few years, Jonathan has developed his music through a series of projects, notably his longstanding trio with Steve Rose and Winston Clifford, the Monk Liberation Front ( a band conceived with Tony Kofi which celebrates the music of Thelonious Monk) and recently a trio with the Italian bass/drums pair, Gallo and Minetto.
Danilo Gallo from Venice on double bass, and Allesandro Minetto from Torino on drums perform with the best musicians in Italy including ex- Miles Davis saxophone legend Steve Grossman and Herbie Hancock feted pianist Antonio Farao
Since a chance meeting at The Appenine Jazz Festival in 2003 the trio have played and broadcast extensively in Italy , The UK, France and Ireland. They all compose for the trio and their album 'Cream of Mandarins" on the Artesuono label was described by Jazzwise magazine as "A remarkably assured trio album that lavishly rewards repeated listenings" and The Guardian named it ' CD of the week.'
