Jazz Steps Nottingham THE AUDIENCE FOR JAZZ IN THE EAST MIDLANDS- a research report by Heather Maitland for EMJAZZ Jazz Steps Nottingham

Ian Carr - a Celebration of his Life & Music

I have waited to announce this until I was sure that the details were finalised, and it has taken quite a time to sort out - .John Cumming of Serious productions and I have organised a concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, titled " Ian Carr - a Celebration of his Life & Music" at 7.30pm on Tuesday 23rd February 2010. It is 2 days before the anniversary of his death.

It will feature

Michael Garrick leading the surviving members of the Don Rendell - Ian Carr Quintet (Don, Dave Green & Trevor Tomkins). Also in the line-up will be Henry Lowther, Art Theman & special guest Norma Winstone, recreating Michael's band of 1970.

Michael Gibbs will conduct Ian's "Northumbrian Sketches" a 30 minute suite for trumpet and string orchestra, with members of Nucleus, John Marshall and special guest Guy Barker on trumpet. This performance is sponsored by Richard Astor.

Nucleus Revisited with Geoff Castle, Phil Todd, Mark Wood, Rob Statham, Nic France and Chris Bachelor on trumpet will finish the evening with guests Ray Russell & Tim Whitehead.

There may well be additional guests: so many musicians wanted to take part we have had to restrict numbers to keep the concert to a reasonable length. Any surplus will go to the Alzheimer's Society. It should be a memorable and joyful event

Tickets for the general public go on sale on 15th December.

Several friends of Ian have already pledged sponsorship for the event, and we are holding onto a block of prime seats (rows 5-8, centre block of stalls) for sale to anyone who wants to make an extra donation over and above the £20 cost of the seat. This extra money would sponsor the success of the event and would create the surplus we hope to give to the Alzheimer's Society in Ian's name. Our target is a £5000 donation. We hope to arrange a small reception before the concert for holders of these sponsorship tickets. If you would like to contribute in this way please call me on 020 8994 0054 or email me. We are suggesting a donation of £100 (£20 face value of the ticket plus £80 donation). We are also investigating whether it is possible for the donated amounts to qualify under the Government's Gift Aid scheme in which the donor's tax paid on the amount is paid to the recipient as well (i.e the taxman coughs up another 28% for every pound donated.)
